Dancer and actress Rukmini Vijayakumar is enthusiastic about the festive season, as it has been a joy since her childhood. On the fourth day of Navratri, represented by the color orange, we have a conversation with her about the festival, her childhood memories of it, and what the color orange, symbolizing energy and vigor, signifies to her. She shares, "My fondest memories of Navratri revolve around setting up the golu (gombe) display as a child. Along with my brother and cousins, we would also compete in planting ragi seeds and watching them grow. We would judge who had the best section of the golu display and the most impressive dolls." As a dancer, Rukmini is accustomed to wearing vibrant costumes, but does the color orange hold special meaning for her? She replies, "When I think of orange, I envision the sun and flowers. It reminds me of the hue my feet turned after washing off alta (red ink) in my younger days, as well as the stains left by henna. Orange symbolizes the spirit of joy and unity. Indian festivals are a riot of colors, with orange and yellow prominently featured in our joyous celebrations." Rukmini reflects, "Orange evokes a sense of happiness combined with a drive for achievement. It ignites a fire within me, motivating me to strive for greatness." Her mother interjects that for her, orange embodies knowledge. Rukmini also reminisces about the vibrant dancing that Navratri entailed for her. She recounts, "Some of my cherished memories of Navratri involve dancing Dandiya late into the night. My mother was strict when I was young, restricting my outings, but she made an exception during Navratri. Dancing all night would leave my feet sore, with blisters and tape around the toes, but the joy of the festivities made it all worthwhile."She remembers her past dances fondly. Rukmini believes that the essence of festivals has evolved. She notes a decrease in Dandiya nights compared to her childhood. Rukmini cherishes her favorite festive memory, recalling how she used to attend dance classes at her teacher's house during Navratri. Nowadays, her students gather at her dance class for Vijayadashami, making it a significant celebration for her.
